Facing Mortality

Mortality is something we never want to imagine, contemplate or talk about. Though we all know that we cannot escape it forever, so it is better to face it, understand it and plan for it without fear, ignorance or avoidance. Maybe the process helps us see things beyond the current wall-of-end for us – our death.

Mortality can be broadly classified in 3 types:

  1. Mental
  2. Physical
  3. Eternal

Each type is very distinct and has a very clear boundary.
Let us zoom-in to look deeper into each of them:

  1. Mental Mortality: When you stop accepting any new challenge you become mentally dead. Mental death is not the brain-death which is a technical definition of physical death. Mental death can occur much earlier than your physical death.
    1. Attributes: The main defining characteristics of mental death are:
      1. Stop participating in day-to-day joys and sorrows of life completely.
      2. Stop smiling, laughing and make no attempts to humor others.
      3. Stop contributing in any way to friends, family and community.
      4. Accept the total defeat and do not even try anything because you are crippled by the fear of failure.
      5. No action in terms of creativity through any individual talents and strengths you might have.
      6. Stop loving and caring self and others.
      7. Lose all hope.
      8. Isolate.
      9. Life is purely existential with no meaningful living whatsoever.
    2. This is not the actual end, and something can definitely be done to revive a mentally dead person.
  2. Physical Mortality: This is what the most common perception of mortality is. Physical death is very apparent and does not have the subtleness of mental death. It happens when our body shuns functioning, breathing stops and ultimately brain dies beyond any possibilities of reversal. This is the final cross-over, a point-of-no-return from where we cannot do anything physically or mentally.
    1. Attributes:
      1. Physical death is inevitable as of now at least.
      2. One leaves completely empty handed and even has to renounce the body which is generally what we are most attached to and is the most physical version of life or self.
      3. Everything is over and nothing matters anymore whether any completed work, any unfinished business, unpaid bills, hatred, fights, intention of revenge, dreams, desires, ego, good, bad, right, wrong, rich, poor, named or defamed.
      4. Physical death can prevent us in:
        1. Not to be overly attached to physical possessions.
        2. Not to take ourselves too seriously and not to worry too much about our personal ego.
        3. Not to get too angry over petty or even big issues of everyday life.
      5. Physical death can help in:
        1. Appreciating the more important things in life such as the people you love and the people who loved you.
        2. Having the inspiration, fulfillment and satisfaction of differences you made, can make and are making in the lives of others for betterment.
        3. Valuing, enjoying and relishing every moment you have to have a non-stop party and living fully spreading happiness, cheerfulness and goodness.
      6. Give everything before you leave: Not having an infinite time in hand must create some sense of urgency to really figure out what to do with our lives as early as we can and then able to do enough action as per our life plan. If we know that we will live forever then probably we might not get anything done thinking there is perpetual time to do anything, why to do it now? So our job should be able to empty ourselves out during our lifetime.
  3. Eternal Mortality: This is very interesting because this happens after physical death and is something where we could not make any active difference. The person lives after physical death in remembrances, references or quotations through his or her work, accomplishments, writings and any other contributions or impacts. This can be very short-lived and can happen as soon as physical death occurs or it can be lasting forever eternally making someone practically immortal. Though being immortal again is subjective and only means not-dead-till-now and is something which can-happen-in-future.
    1. Attributes:
      1. Short term eternal death: If no one remembers you after you die then you are eternally dead. Sometimes someone could last just few days, few months or few years by family members, but that is it.
      2. Midterm eternal death:
        1. Lasts few generations.
        2. Can last longer with photographs, videos etc.
      3. Immortal/Long-term eternal death:
        1. Through foundations
        2. Breakthrough work
          1. Arts:
            1. Music
            2. Art work such as Paintings
            3. Movies
          2. Science
            1. Inventions
            2. Discovery
          3. Writer
        3. Part of History
